GAITHERSBURG, Md. — The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Countrywide Institute of Standards and Technological innovation (NIST) has awarded a full of $2.08 million to 7 corporations in 6 states to create manufacturing technology roadmaps to fortify U.S. innovation and productivity across entire industry sectors. This is the 2nd round of grants awarded to universities, market and nonprofit companies by way of NIST’s State-of-the-art Production Technological innovation Roadmap Software (MfgTech).

Just about every award of up to $300,000 will fund projects for up to 18 months to deal with nationwide priorities such as production of critical infrastructure, interaction, and transformative strategies and technologies in development. NIST programs to make extra awards beneath different classes.

“This new round of awards allows strategic partnerships throughout the country that will determine and document means to speed up the adoption of essential production technologies in the U.S.,” explained Mike Molnar, director of the NIST Office of Highly developed Manufacturing. “The roadmaps are in key locations for the producing industry and the country, like infrastructure, quantum, artificial intelligence and device learning, 5G, sustainability, and even manufacturing in area.”

Every consortium will interact stakeholders in market and academia to detect and prioritize exploration assignments that minimize barriers to the development of superior manufacturing in the U.S. The resulting roadmaps will identify and rank exploration and improvement objectives tackle workforce techniques gaps advertise variety, equity and inclusion in producing and determine techniques to velocity technological know-how progress and transfer to make improvements to producing competitiveness.

The lead recipients and their projects are:

Edison Welding Institute Inc. (Columbus, Ohio) — $300,000
The job will establish a extensive U.S. roadmap to speed up fabrication of large structures such as bridges, wind towers, pipelines and ships. The roadmap will concentrate on rising versatility and electrical power performance, and reducing expenses, by deploying superior products, massive-scale additive producing and other technologies.

College of Houston (Houston, Texas) — $300,000
This roadmap will detect manufacturing challenges and engineering limitations associated with a variety of system systems these kinds of as superconductors and state-of-the-art structural elements to accelerate the commercialization of long run carbon-neutral electric devices and units.

ASTM International (West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania) — $299,989
The award will be utilised to develop a roadmap to information the design manufacturing sector in adoption of innovative systems these as additive manufacturing, robotics, automation and artificial intelligence for enhanced productiveness, efficiency, adaptability and security.

Situation Western Reserve University (Cleveland, Ohio) — $299,745
The awardee will establish a engineering roadmap to integrate artificial intelligence and machine finding out applications with conventional material science and production course of action knowledge over the whole merchandise existence cycle for a extensive approach to foreseeable future manufacturing of sophisticated supplies.

SRI Intercontinental (Menlo Park, California) — $299,128
The funding will help a Quantum Technological innovation Production Roadmap that identifies pre-aggressive improvement and provide chain gaps to aid maintain U.S. dominance in quantum-relevant fields to advantage various quantum technologies application places.

University of New Hampshire (Durham, New Hampshire) — $297,877
This roadmap will explore a new paradigm in producing for the equitable commercialization, industrialization and democratization of production in place. To generate the roadmap, the awardee will evaluate obstacles to commercializing a place-primarily based production financial system, recommend solutions, and create guides that will enable improve U.S. management in place, economic progress and national protection.

Intercontinental Electronics Production Initiative Inc. (Morrisville, North Carolina) — $290,865
The funds will help a roadmap for advancing the producing of leading-edge 5G and 6G products and solutions to speed up the enhancement of the up coming era of U.S. wireless networks.
